LATHAM – Deborah L. (Spiak) Bendon passed peacefully from this life on Friday, February 7, 2025 at the age of 70 years.
Deborah was born on December 28, 1954 to parents Walter “Jake” and Pauline (Opalka) Spiak and grew up in Maplewood where she attended the Maplewood School. She later graduated with the Class of 1972 from Watervliet High School and continued her education at SUNY Cortland and UMASS Amherst from where she earned her Master’s degree in exercise science. She also obtained a certificate in Mathematics from SUNY Albany.
Deborah was a teacher and she enjoyed a long and rewarding career educating high school students in mathematics in the Schenectady City School District. Following her retirement, and with a desire to continue that which she loved, she tutored students and served as a substitute teacher in several area school districts. Her passion for teaching was evidenced by her devotion to her students and her hopes for the successes she knew they could achieve. On occasion former students would reach out to update her on the successes in their lives and offer her their thanks for her dedication to them in the classroom.
Deborah enjoyed the outdoors and all it had to offer. She loved camping, kayaking, hiking and taking her family on outdoor adventures. The Adirondacks held a special place in her heart. Her home was her domain and a haven in which she could read an Agatha Christie novel, watch and enjoy the winter and summer Olympics, crochet items for gifts, grow plants in her garden, decorate for and celebrate the holidays, especially Christmas and Easter, and entertain and cook for her family and their friends whether it was just a one extra person, several or occasionally an entire school sports team. There was always activity in her home and room for more family and friends at Deborah’s table.
She appreciated her Russian heritage and was a member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church in Maplewood where she once taught Sunday school.
Deborah loved being a wife, a mom and a grandmother. She shared a wonderful marriage of 43 years with her husband Tom. Their four sons, Tom, Alex, Adam and Matt filled Deborah’s heart with pride and supporting them in all of their activities and sporting events was a role she cherished. Her grand-daughter Louise gave her many reasons to be the proudest “Baba”.
She was the beloved wife of Thomas G. Bendon; the proud and loving mother of Thomas E. Bendon (Jennifer Schoolfield), Alex M. Bendon, Adam M. Bendon and Matthew V. Bendon; the cherished “Baba” of Louise Bendon; the sister of Kathleen Spiak, Cynthia (John “Rocco”) Varacchi, Tamara Spiak (Robert) Derico, Loretta (Cheryl Woods) Spiak, Karen Spiak and Kimberly (Gerard) Cuva; the sister-in-law of Mary Jane Bendon (Mark) Couch and she was a loving aunt to several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She is also survived by several cousins and many friends. Deborah was preceded in death by her parents, Walter “Jake” and Pauline (Opalka) Spiak and her brother Walter A. “Jake” Spiak whose wife Barbara survives.
A funeral service for Deborah will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at 11 a.m. in St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, 21 Archibald Street, Maplewood. A springtime interment will be held in St. Basil’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with the Bendon family on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Parker Bros. Memorial in Watervliet. A Panakhida service will be held in the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Donations, in memory of Deborah and in recognition for her love of the outdoors, may be made to the Adirondack Mountain Club, c/o ADK Donations, 494 Maple Ave., Suite 1, Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866.
