Comments:

I started my tenure at WHS in eighth grade, after attending School 3 for eight years. I spent four wonderful years at the high school level, enjoying those years meeting friends that would last a lifetime. Athletics and academics went hand in hand. I played three sports all four years, with the exception of my senior year when Prof Jones, the basketball coach, told me I could either play varsity basketball or be the Student Council President. I opted for the latter and never regretted it. I still don't understand his rationale but back then who questioned authority. After five years of education at Albany College of Pharmacy I decided to go back to WHS, my home, and teach Health Education and act as District Health Coordinator for 35 years. The latter years were spent writing grants for the district, developing courses in video, health and the media, and working with the Watervliet Housing Authority to develop and implement the City's own television station through Time Warner Cable.

A Watervliet boy who went off to war and never came home. Buried in Nettuno, Italy. My father's only son. I never got to meet him, I was born long after his death.

LATHAM - Elmer P. Dagner Jr., 90 of Latham, beloved husband of Mildred (Pilatich), entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 24, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Elmer and Helen (Bernacki) Dagner. Elmer graduated from Watervliet High School and went on to earn his Associates Degree from Hudson Valley Community College. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Elmer retired from Niagara Mohawk after 30 years of service. He performed community service for the Colonie Senior Citizens Club. He enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife to Europe. In addition, Elmer also was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. Elmer's greatest source of joy, however, was without a doubt his family. He loved them deeply, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sorely missed yet forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

In addition to his dear wife Mildred, survivors include his children Timothy (Janice) Dagner and Anne Marie (Rob) Zielinski, siblings Maryann Wunsch, Eric Dagner Sr., as well as four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his late parents, Elmer is predeceased by his siblings Frances Stock, Robert Dagner, and Patricia Grovenger.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a visitation on Saturday, April 29th, 2023, from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Rd., Latham. The Watervliet Elks Lodge will conduct a ritual at 10:00 am. Following the visitation, the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Rd., Latham, 11:00 AM. Rite of Committal and interment with military honors will take place on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023, at Saratoga National Cemetery, 12:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Elmer's memory may be made to Community Hospice at The Community Hospice Foundation, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208 or https://www.givetocommunityhospice.org/donate/.
