Stanton was a life long resident of Watervliet, residing on 9th Avenue. He loved playing golf, gardening, or puttering around his house. If he wasn't doing those things, he was usually watching the Yankees on TV whether he had seen the game televised live or not. He cherished every moment he had with his boys and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Stanton was the type of man who would give whether or not he had to give because that is just how he was.

One of the best stories he ever told was when he saw Babe Ruth play an exhibition game down in Menands (across the street from the Menands Price Chopper). He claims that when Babe hit a home run that day, "Babe didn't hit it high, he didn't hit it long...he hit it long AND high! He hit it across the street and hit the Ferris Wheel!!"
